โ ๏ธDear Parent/Guardian of SNL K-2 Students,โ ๏ธ
The Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) is a progress monitoring system that is administered three times per year to track your student's progress in learning the Benchmarks for Excellent Student thinking (B.E.S.T.) Standards throughout this school year. The purpose of this letter is to inform you that your student will take the Kindergarten/Grade 1/Grade 2 Renaissance Star Early Literacy, Star Reading, and/or Star Math assessment(s) on April 15th - April 26th. The results from PM3 will show how well your student has mastered the grade level content standards, and you will be provided with information about how to access the results after testing is completed.
Your student's FAST assessment are computer-adaptive tests taken on a computer or tablet. The questions get less or more difficult depending on how a student responds, and each student will see different questions. If you or your student would like to review Star Early Literacy, Star Reading, and/or Star Math sample items at home, sample test items are available at https://flfast.org/resources/renaissance-star/renaissance-star.
The Star Early Literacy assessment typically rakes less than 15 minutes to complete. The Star Reading assessment is usually completed in less than 20 minutes, and the Star Math assessment typically takes less than 30 minutes to complete.
If you have any questions related to this test administration, you may contact Mrs. Jessica Lowe at lowej2@highlands.k12.fl.us.
For more information about the Florida Statewide Assessments program, please visit the portal at FLFAST.org.
Thank you for supporting your student and encouraging him or her to do his or her best during this test administration.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Jessica Lowe
Assistant Principal

The purpose of this letter is to inform you that your student will take the computer-based Grade 4 or 5 Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) Writing assessment on April 2, 2024. The B.E.S.T. Writing assessment is administered in one 120-minute session, and students may work up to half of a typical school day.
If you or your student would like to review the computer-based practice test at home, the practice tests and answer keys are available at https://fsassessments.org/families.html.
Please review the following policies with your student before testing:
Students are not permitted to have any electronic devices, including, but not limited to, cell phones, smartphones, and smartwatches, at any time during testing or during breaks (e.g., restroom), If your student is found with an electronic device or is found using Bluetooth/wireless headphones/earbuds during testing, his or her test will be invalidated.
All tests include a Testing Rules Acknowledgment that reads: โI understand the testing rules that were just read to me. If I do not follow these rules, my test score may be invalidated.โ Prior to testing, test administrators read the rules to students, and students acknowledge that they understand the testing rules by clicking a checkbox beside the statement in the secure browser indicating they understand the testing rules.
The last portion of the testing rules read to students before they click the box to accept the Testing Rules Acknowledgment states that because the content of all statewide assessments is secure, students may not discuss or reveal details about the test content (including the passages, prompts, and writing responses) after the test. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as texting, emailing, or posting to social media sites. Please make sure your student understands this policy prior to testing and remind them that โdiscussingโ test content includes any kind of electronic communication, such as texting, emailing, posting to social media, or sharing online.
Students are responsible for doing their own work during the test and for protecting their answers from being seen by others. If students are caught cheating during testing, their tests will be invalidated. In addition, the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) employs Caveon Test Security to analyze student test results to detect unusually similar answer patterns. Student tests within a school that are found to have extremely similar answer patterns will be invalidated.
If your student leaves campus before completing a test session (e.g., for lunch, an appointment), he or she will not be allowed to return to that test session. If your student does not feel well on the day of testing, it may be best for him or her to wait and be tested on a make-up day. Please remember not to schedule appointments on testing days.
If your student has an Individual Education Plan (IEP), a Section 504 Plan, or is an English Language Learner (ELL) or a recently exited ELL, please contact the school to discuss the testing accommodations that will be provided for your student.
If you have any questions related to this test administration, you may contact Mrs. Jessica Lowe at lowej2@highlands.k12.fl.us.

On Sunday, March 10, 2024 our clocks will โSpring Forwardโ an hour, resulting in darker morning commutes. What does that mean for students? The beginning of Daylight Saving Time (DST) means that students and families should consider extra safety measures when traveling to school and bus stops.
It will be darker on the way to school. Students should wear bright colors to be spotted easily by motorists, or wear a backpack, jacket, or hat featuring reflective fabric.
If old enough to walk or bike without an adult, arrange travel to school with a friend or group, as well as wearing bright colors.
It is easy for students to get distracted by their phone, cars, and other pedestrians when walking to school. Remind them to keep alert and aware of their surroundings, and walk on the designated sidewalk or walkway.
Students should maintain focus and look for oncoming traffic in both directions before crossing the street. It's also important for them to continue looking for vehicles until they have finished crossing.
Arrive at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive at the bus stop. Ensure that your child is 6 feet (or three giant steps) away from the curb/roadway at all times.
Remind them to wait until the bus is completely stopped and the door is open before attempting to enter or exit, and use the handrail on the stairs. When the bus is in motion, everyone should stay seated, keep all body parts and school materials inside the bus, ensure the aisle is clear of books and bags, and use a seatbelt if one is provided.
The United States Department of Transportation states that almost all bus-related injuries involving children happen outside and around the bus. The โdanger zoneโ is considered 10 feet around the bus on all sides. Students should never walk behind a school bus and always make eye contact with the bus driver before crossing (at least 10 feet) in front of the bus to ensure that you are seen. If your child drops something near the school bus like a phone or a book, the safest thing for them to do is to get the bus drivers attention, then tell the bus driver right away before attempting to retrieve the item.
